Friday, May 22, 2008 - Links Page Updated

Fixed links to existing sites; removed downed sites.  Sorry for any problems there.

Friday, September 16, 2005 - Site to Undergo Update

This site is now on a new updated server.  I guess it is time to update the pages, and get rid of out-dated material.

Biff hasn't run a game server in years, and has no plans to.  He's busy hang-gliding a lot these days.  We both rarely game. So the pages relating to game serving will reflect a more general tone, than one specific to Biff's game serving.

The downloads and galleries will stay, and all the links to other sites will stay.  The site will remain a file support site and portal to other Doom community support sites.

I see that CarnEvil (Hi Brad) has been busy with Skulltag coding.  Skulltag is an excellent platform and has a great community of gamers.  I'm happy that it is going stong, along with Internet Doom Explorer as well.  Keep up the great work guys.

On behalf of Biff, we send our best to you all.

Friday, March 11, 2005 - Pop-Up Ads? What the ...?

If you've seen pop-up ads here, I didn't code them.  I think BraveNet, who hosted our forums, chat, and polls, was slipping them into their code stream. So, I've removed all the BraveNet code (note the bare bar to the left).

Sorry about that folks. If you see further pop-ups, please Email me ASAP.

Monday, August 11, 2003 - Rarefiles Gets Small Overhaul

The DOWNLOADS page has been overhauled for better clarity and sub-division.  It is now alphabetical where applicable.  The ABOUT page has an expanded short story about my progression from the early days through present.  Hopefully Biff will add his tale as well.

Updated the Bravenet counters on the home page and the downloads page so they will work.  You can click on the stats underneath the counters; they look pretty interesting.  Especially the fact that most people who visit here use Win98!

Removed my handle from the site's title.  Just doesn't need to be there.

The old site, at a search engine which will remain unnamed, will be dismantled.

Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - Rarefiles Moves to New Web Host, Dumps Lycos!

RareFiles now has lots of breathing room - no restrictions on bandwidth or file size, and no banner ads.  And it loads faster.  I can restore a bunch of files that I had to remove when sLycos cut everyone's throat, er... disk space, from 50 to 20Mb (read letter here).  Many of them are quite unique and I love them all.  I'll also be re-vamping all the content.  Sheesh, DoomServ instructions are still up here.

Also I have access to SSI, PHP, MySQL, and some other nifty stuff if need be.

I will also have a PayPal donate page for those who wish to contribute a buck or two for the cause.  Anything is appreciated (cause my online business, the reason I bought this host, isn't doing squat!).

"With Lycos, FAILURE WAS _NOT_ AN OPTION.  It came bundled with the service."
Sunday, June 1, 2003 - What Happened to RareFiles' Servers

Biff has been on hiatus with family and work matters for quite a while.  I (Falconer) have been following his lead, so to speak.  Additionally, we both have minor issues with Zdaemon.

For Biff, RareFiles' map rotations require that mlook work correctly at any distance. At this time, this is not the case.  But, he is encouraged that fixing the problem is a top priority.

For me, getting to any server should not require setting up an account on a master server (be it Zdaemon or otherwise).  Other than preventing impersonation, or tracking users, there is no need for this.  And, historically, impersonation in the Doom community was a trifle issue.  Requiring a master server account is not warranted, IMNSHO.

Internet Doom Explorer circumvents the Big Brother approach above.  It lists CSDoom, Zdaemon, and Skilltag servers, and displays scads of information about them.  I love the program, and will promote it heavily here from now on.  You'll still need Zdaemon, or CSDoom, or Skulltag installed, but with IDE as your front end, you can opt-out of Big Brother's watchful eye.
